SSS 2017-18 Round-up
Last weekend saw the conclusion of our SSS year, after five league matches, the SSS Indoor Championships at the beginning of April and most recently the SSS Outdoor Championships and Head-to-Heads on our very own playing fields.
A total of 26 EUAC members competed in the matches bringing together archers from novice squad, development squad, and the performance programme. Recurve, compound, barebow, and longbow archers, novice and experienced, travelled the country to continue the tradition of bringing home the league title. All our teams (experienced non-compound, novice non-compound, and compound) finished top of their league with our novice and compound teams remaining undefeated throughout all matches- well done!
The SSS Indoor Championships hosted by St Andrews marked a late end of the indoor season. Nine EUAC archers fought for medals and were rewarded: Our novice team won gold, while the senior and compound teams finished in second place. A special mention must go to our novice Ove who was not only the highest scoring compound archer of the day, novice or senior, but also broke an all-uni record. Further Scottish university champions were Petr in the novice gents recurve category and Johanna in the ladies recurve. Leanne and Robin brought back silver and bronze respectively in the novice ladies recurve.
The Outdoor Championships followed just two weeks after its indoor equivalent, posing a challenge especially to our novices who had limited time to practice outdoors. Nevertheless, three of our novices accepted this challenge and left the field on Saturday with a gold medal each: Robin in the novice ladies recurve, Petr in the novice gents recurve and Ove in the novice gents compound. More gold was accumulated in the senior categories with Jess Nirkko winning the ladies longbow, Johanna winning the ladies recurve and Kara coming second in the ladies compound. Unfortunately, we did not have enough archers for the teams: this will be a goal for the coming season.
While the weather on Saturday was too good to be true–warm, sunny, only a little wind–April decided to show its cold, wet, and stormy face on Sunday. Still most of our archers, joined by some alumni, braved the weather and were rewarded. As this competition does not distinguish between novice and experienced archers, it is remarkable that all our novices finished on the podium: Petr won the gents recurve category with Ove coming second in the mixed compound and Robin third in the ladies recurve. Kara came third in the mixed compound and Johanna won the ladies recurve. Thank you to everyone who helped in preparing and running this event, especially Pip, Xanthe and Jack for their tireless work throughout the whole weekend.
Well done to everyone who participated and made these achievements possible. Last but not least thank you to SSS and our fellow SSS clubs. We’ll be back ready for the start of a new SSS season in autumn–but for now, our sights are set for a medal hunt at BUCS Outdoors.
